From a young age, we are taught to feel shame about our sexuality. Unfortunately, this shame often stops people from accessing routine health care if they are afraid they will be judged negatively by health care providers, friends, family members or even their partners. To help people who feel anxious or shame about their sexuality, several new smartphone apps have been created to help people take care of their sexual health in a safe environment. Some apps allow people to connect with medical specialists from a computer (HealthTap, LiveHealth Online, and JustDoc), some allow people to order contraceptives from their phone (Nurx) and others offer at home STI testing kits with results sent to the person’s phone (Biem, MyLAB Box, uBiome). The hope is that with more services available, people can get the care they need and live healthier lives.
