Find it hard to talk with your teen sometimes? A recent article titled, “Keep Teens Talking: Learn to Listen…Not React,” has great tips for parents. The article, published on parentandteen.com, has a roadmap of the Do’s and Don’ts for talking about a wide range of topics parents need to discuss with their tweens and teens. The article points out that parents often react immediately to what their tween or teen tells them. If you hear something you don’t like or that makes you worried, the knee-jerk response is to interrupt, lecture, command, or simply to share your opinion. The intent is good – to keep your son or daughter safe – but many young people respond by telling us less and less. Listening can be just as effective if not more so.
